UNITY THROUGH UNIFORM by Widya Ayu Permata

Students in Indonesia are using uniform. That is all we knew. Uniform is brand of identity for all students around the world. So does in Indonesia. Uniforms in Indonesia are divided by the stage of school. Elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school students are using different kind of uniforms. But, nowadays, there are many rumors that suggest to abolish the use of uniforms. They say uniform does not give any impact to the quality of education. However, the use of uniform is such an important things for any students. Therefore, student should always wear uniforms in school.

The first reason why student should always wear uniform is because uniforms make students easy to indentificate. Why? Because by using uniform, we can easily recognize where the student belongs to. Wether from one school or another. Uniforms can show the differences between elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school students by the different color of their trousers. Besides, the using of uniforms also can ease teachers to monitor their students when they join some activity or competition outside the schools. 

Second, uniforms can increase students’ sense of belonging to their schools. Uniforms can create a sense of unity of the students to their school because they can not see the difference between them. Students from rich or poor family are treated equally because they use same uniforms. Uniforms can be one of the reason not to bully others because they are all same, come from the same school, get same facilities and own same rights to study in that school. We have to be well behave to all of our friends, regardless of their financial background. When we can apply that behavior, school will be such a nice place to study in harmony.

The last thing, uniform can create discipline generation. With the use of school uniforms that determined based on day of every week, we can create the spirit of discipline. For example, on Monday to Thursday students wear white uniform, Friday and Saturday wear scout uniform, and every sports time they wear sports uniform. There is a difference between school uniform and other clothes. Each clothes are used according to the functions and  conditions. Uniforms can form neatness. When we were on flag ceremony, neatness will be shown by the school uniform and all the attributes. Only discipline student will wear a complete uniform as instructed.

From the three points above, we can see so many reasons for students to always wear uniforms in school. The use of uniforms can give some benefits to all students. We can easily identificate the origin school of some students. We can also monitor the students when they are outside of schools. It also increase students’ sense of belonging to their school because there are no different treatment to students from rich family or the poor one. With the use of uniforms, we can also create a discipline generation. Because students are trained to obey all the rules in using uniforms. We can conclude that there are no reasons to abolish the use of uniforms.
